Deck Tech – Immortal Fünf

Hello!

Today we are going to talk about one of the most well-received rulers of The War of the Suns: Deathwing Fünf, Dark Feather (TWS-076). His own keyword, «Blessing», although it does nothing by itself, enables the use of the rest of the cards in his support.

One of the biggest problems we run into when building a Deathwing Fünf, Dark Feather (TWS-076) deck is that we have to point the deck in one of two possible directions: either we try to fill the field with cards that gain abilities by blessing them, or we speed up the plays with Sprout of the Treasure Tree of Magog (TWS-083), but we lose the «Blessing» that we have given it along the way. Since Sprout of the Treasure Tree of Magog (TWS-083) is a fairly fragile resonator, I opted to focus this deck’s strategy on stacking as many Blessings as possible on the field and resolving one Imaginary God of the Fallen (TWS-078) after another. The best way to do this is to bless our stones, so those will be the targets of Deathwing Fünf, Dark Feather (TWS-076).

As you can see, Deathwing Fünf, Dark Feather (TWS-076) is not a deck that ends games quickly. Quite the opposite: we seek to create a lock by resolving the contract. Unknown Mother Goose Chronogear (TWS-084J), with one or more instances of «Blessing» will make us practically immortal. We are going to try to play around that, forcing ourselves to get to that situation. That is why I have included a lot of different tools with which to block the game for the opponent, preventing us from losing.

Our goal is to make it to turn three alive, contract, defend our Unknown Mother Goose Chronogear (TWS-084J) with tooth and nail, and hold out until the opponent concedes or until Unknown Mother Goose Chronogear (TWS-084J) has a free way to kill with a single attack just before the time of round is over.

THE CHOICE OF CARDS

Deathwing Fünf, Dark Feather (TWS-076), by itself, doesn’t do much. His only ability is to give «Blessing» to entities, but only once per turn and only during our own turn. However, since the ability to grant instances of Fünf’s «Blessing» and that of granting instances of «Blessing» from Unknown Mother Goose Chronogear (TWS-084J) are not the same, the turn in which we contract we can put up to three instances of «Blessing». Most likely, we will put the Fünf instance on a resonator controlled by the rival, and we will put the two of Unknown Mother Goose Chronogear (TWS-084J) on itself, to become immortal.

Child of Death (TWS-073) serves a very specific function in this deck: since we’re running three copies of Mikage Reiya (AO3-046), combining it with Child of Death (TWS-073)‘s God’s Art can put any darkness resonator in the deck right back into our hand. This allows us to cancel a spell with Persephone, the Eleventh Olympian (GRV-082), to deal 600 damage to any target with Sealed One-Eyed Dragon (NWE-079), and even resolve an Imaginary God of the Fallen (TWS-078) without paying Will if the game has advanced enough.

Child of Eclipse (TWS-053) is the best option as a second ruler with «Bond»: it enables us to have the wind Will coin and from turn three, it cancels an opponent’s God’s Art. It doesn’t have any special synergy with Deathwing Fünf, Dark Feather (TWS-076), but we play it because the God’s Art rulers are the most played right now, so it gives us a great defensive tool against them. I would prefer to use a different ruler as the third ruler, but from the remaining 4, this was the best option.

THE RESONATORS

3x Mikage Reiya (AO3-046)
Our main blocker. We will use the first Mikage Reiya (AO3-046) to find Castle of Beatrice (TST-078) in the deck and then we will take advantage of the additional copies / copies returned to hand from the graveyard to exploit its synergy with Child of Death (TWS-073). Don’t be afraid to make bad trades by blocking with Mikage Reiya (AO3-046) if you have access to extra Will, it will give us a few extra life points (as well as prevent us from losing more) and we can return it from grave back later.

2x Flute, Shion’s Attendant (ROL-011)
During testing, this deck consumed the cards in our hand at a frightening rate. I decided to include two copies of Flute, Shion’s Attendant (ROL-011) to replace them at any time, since we play only five cards that require us to rest the rulers. The option to play one Flute, Shion’s Attendant (ROL-011) and one The Library of Lykeion (EDL-053) exists, but I prefer to play two copies of Flute, Shion’s Attendant (ROL-011) even if they draw less because I can get them back with Castle of Beatrice (TST-078).

2x The Witch of the Fallen Kingdom (ADW-072)
In addition to its use as search-blocking resonator, since we don’t play any copies of Laurite, Seven Luminaries Astrologian (TSW-094), she will be the only way we have to cancel abilities. That’s why I’ve doubled the amount of Witch with a Pointy Hat (ADW-060) on the sideboard and no Pumpkin Witch (CMF-088).

2x Wall of Terror (TST-033)
The best possible card to protect our Unknown Mother Goose Chronogear (TWS-084J). The ability to give [Barrier] to any entity at any time by discarding a card will protect the J-ruler from all destroy or ability loss chaseable effects. It also combines wonderfully with Flute, Shion’s Attendant (ROL-011) allowing us to fill our hand at any time.

1x Academy Guard of Lykeion (EDL-039)
This resonator, which I don’t normally like, here fulfills two functions. First, it protects us from combo decks. Second, combined with Persephone, the Eleventh Olympian (GRV-082)‘s ability to return spells to hand, it grants free turns. We play only one copy because we can search for it.

1x Neverend, Fairy Tale Dragon (MSW-043)
Another of the cards with which to defend our Unknown Mother Goose Chronogear (TWS-084J). By resting any ruler (including the J-ruler), we will give [Eternal] to our entire field, making us immortal for one turn. We also play only one because we can search for it.

4x Persephone, the Eleventh Olympian (GRV-082)
One of the best cards of the deck. Persephone, the Eleventh Olympian (GRV-082) fulfills the function of removal, cancel and graveyard hate. Also, she is a darkness resonator, can be searched with Mikage Reiya (AO3-046), and has synergy with the Castle of Beatrice (TST-078). In a fully defensive deck like this, I prefer her over Laurite, Seven Luminaries Astrologian (TSW-094).

2x Sealed One-Eyed Dragon (NWE-079)
Perhaps the most expensive card in the game right now. It’s free removal, at [Quickcast] speed. It is our main removal, and it has recursion with Magic Stone of Moon Shade (MPR-100). In addition, we can return it to the hand with Child of Death (TWS-073) and with Castle of Beatrice (TST-078).

1x Mariabella (AO2-046)
Both of Mariabella’s effects are good in this deck, serving the same function: searching for Marybell Type Zero (AO2-048) in the deck and putting it into the hand. As the game advances, we can animate the regalia to have an extra attacker or an extra blocker. We play only one copy because we can search for it.

3x Imaginary God of the Fallen (TWS-078)
One of the two main reasons to play Deathwing Fünf, Dark Feather (TWS-076). The [Enter] trigger from Imaginary God of the Fallen (TWS-078) puts us in a very clear advantage situation. Also, when we accumulate 5+ «Blessing» in different entities, this card will cost 0 Will, allowing us to infinitely recur it with Castle of Beatrice (TST-078). It is a key card for this deck to work.

CHANTS, ADDITIONS AND REGALIA

4x Summon the Dragon of Death! (TWS-084) // Unknown Mother Goose Chronogear (TWS-084J)
The most important card in the deck. By contracting, it makes us virtually immortal. But what I like most about Deathwing Fünf, Dark Feather (TWS-076)‘s contract is that it has [Mastery], so it’s a 0 cost area removal. If we spend our turns giving Blessing to our opponent’s resonators, we can destroy them all at once with just resting the ruler.

4x The Sword of Progression (TWS-065) // Genesis Chronogear (TWS-065J)
This slot was previously occupied by 4 Memory of Worlds (TUS-043) // Recorder of Worlds (TUS-043J), but the difference between a hard-counter and a soft-counter becomes noticeable when you play a game that you expect to last more than 6 turns. Since this deck has no intention of winning the game quickly, I preferred to include 4 The Sword of Progression (TWS-065) because it cancels 100% everything it targets.

3x Blessing of Dark Feather (TWS-072)
I have dispensed with other addition removals because with this card we can destroy almost anything. In addition, it has another function: put +3 blessing on our field at the same time. Remember that to be able to choose this mode we must make three different objectives, so if there are no three different legal targets we will not be able to play it with that mode.

2x The Awakening of Fiethsing (MSW-060)
I’ve chosen to play this card over Pricia, Seeker of Friends // Pricia’s Big Show (ROL-018) because I have them World Qualifier promo because the seek targets are all 1 cost and I always want them as fast as possible. In practice, while Pricia, Seeker of Friends // Pricia’s Big Show (ROL-018) is generally better, complicating my search spell being canceled has been more useful to me.

3x Angelic Battle Barrier (NWE-001)
We will use this card defensively against combo decks and aggro decks thanks to its ability to play it without paying its cost. In addition, we can use it to defend our own contract by playing it before contracting.

3x Age of Death (TWS-069)
The only card that activates with «Blessing» that I think is worth it. This addition creates a constant -X00-X00 cloud effect on the opponent’s table. As long as they don’t get rid of it, we’re safe. This card must be answered instantly, but not all decks can. In addition, the rival loses 1 card when he comes into play and another when he destroys it, so he always does 2×1 in favor.

1x Castle of Beatrice (TST-078)
Mikage Reiya (AO3-046)‘s main target. Has synergy with all resonators in the deck. While in our graveyard, it is protected from all remove-from-play effects, which will only affect Castle of Beatrice (TST-078). Remember that Horn of Sacred Beasts (SKL-099) still affects us.

Marybell Type Zero (AO2-048)
The Unknown Mother Goose Chronogear (TWS-084J) most difficult defensive card to remove out of all the ones we play. Being a regalia, the spells that are normally played to destroy additions do not affect it. He is also a fantastic attacker, because even if our field has a -X00-X00 cloud effect, when it becomes a 1000/1000, it ignores it.

THE STONES

We have a completely black-green stone base. Ten stones produce black, ten stones produce green and six of them, the other attributes. Be very careful with Magic Stone of Moon Shade (MPR-100): they will stop producing attribute Will when our life is 0 or less. That is the reason not to play more. We don’t play a copy of Amadeus, Holy Crystal (TST-095) because the times we play against a deck with only one ruler, it’s going to be a useless stone. We also don’t play Magic Stone of Knowledge (ADW-098) because we don’t want to have a stone that doesn’t produce darkness for the first two game turns.

SIDEBOARD

1x Rogue Spectator (GRL-021)
The only function that Rogue Spectator (GRL-021) fulfills in this deck is to win the mirror. Since Unknown Mother Goose Chronogear (TWS-084J) being destroyed changes its controller’s life total to 1000, it is considered life gain and is stopped by Rogue Spectator (GRL-021.

1x The Witch of the Fallen Kingdom (ADW-072)
Since our strategy is to defend the first turns, an additional copy of The Witch of the Fallen Kingdom (ADW-072) will allow us to do it more effectively against decks that abuse Dexia’s Advice (TUS-026) or Pricia, Seeker of Friends // Pricia’s Big Show (ROL-018).

2x Hellfire of the Demonic World (GRL-018)
This is the best card to face the Deathwing Fünf, Dark Feather (TWS-076) mirror. It will remove the [Barrier] and [Eternal] from the opponent’s Unknown Mother Goose Chronogear (TWS-084J) and then we can destroy it with any removal. Also works vs Neverend, Fairy Tale Dragon (MSW-043) and its friends.

2x The Damascus Moon (TUS-101)
One of the best cards vs addition decks, like Falchion, Solitary Scientist (NWE-066) or Dendrobium (TUS-077J). We will replace our Age of Death (TWS-069) with these moons when we face them. But where it is extremely good is when facing an Arena Expansion: Linorsphairia (GRL-069) which completely disables us.

2x Witch with a Pointy Hat (ADW-060)
The target of The Witch of the Fallen Kingdom (ADW-072). They are the substitute for Laurite, Seven Luminaries Astrologian (TSW-094) in very long games, which also prevent damage when facing decks focused on attacking with the ruler, such as Alice, Tales of Creation (GRL-067) // Order of Genesis (GRL-067J).

2x Loki’s Insight (AOA-051)
An additional help when facing control decks. Along with Angelic Battle Barrier (NWE-001), this card will pave the way for us when we want to contract.

2x Don’t Cheat! (AO2-025)
A specific card vs Hyde, Solitary Assassin (TUS-068). Combined with Persephone, the Eleventh Olympian (GRV-082), this card will make things very difficult for Hyde, Solitary Assassin (TUS-068) when it tries to contract. If there is no Hyde, Solitary Assassin (TUS-068) in your area, replace these cards with 2 The Wind of Zeus (GRV-046).

3x Lightning Cave (TSW-064)
One of the best anti-aggro deck additions. Since the most common thing is that the resonators of the decks that attempt to kill in the first turns are not water resonators, with Lightning Cave (TSW-064) we will be able to be safe those first turns that we need so much. It is useless vs Aristella, Twin Prince (NWE-057) Aggro, but for that deck we already have the Age of Death (TWS-069).

CONCLUSIONS

Immortal Fünf is a very solid deck and a lot of fun to play. I think that it can get a good result in a big event, but at the same time it seems to me that, due to the type of deck it is, it will be difficult for it to win said event. Lock decks need the player to be in tune with their strategy, because going off plan means losing, which is why they are not as popular as other decks.

Pros:

  • This deck has a great matchup against decks that run out of gas quickly. Few decks can stand against it after turn 6.

Cons:

  • The pace of the game is a leisurely and somewhat tedious. If you like to interact a lot with your opponent, this deck is not for you.
