Ragnarok at Worlds 2023

Hi everyone!

My name is Samir Bachar, I’m 28 years old and I’ve been playing different TCGs for a long time. What I prefer in all of these TCGs is the deck creation process. For the Ragnarok, Invading Dragon Lord (EDL-096) list I played at Worlds, I tried to build this deck to win the Force of Will World Championship. The main focus point for me was , that we needed to bring innovations into decks for them being competitive enough to win Worlds.

With a deck like Ragnarok, Invading Dragon Lord (EDL-096), opponents aren’t prepared for it and this increased my possibilities of winning (because I don’t have a lot of experience in FoW). In the beginning I was playing a control deck like my friend François Billaud, but I didn’t recognize myself in this deck and in the others we knew and tested at that time. I personally prefer midrange decks which can aggress.

Then I remembered that a German player (Minh Ha) played Ragnarok, Invading Dragon Lord (EDL-096) at the Converging Wills online tournament last year. His deck was not the strongest at that time, but we were shocked about the power of the Ruler and his potential with the banlist (and thanks to the unbans of course).

We initially thought that it would be impossible to build a 40 cards singleton deck that would be perfect (and therefore one of the main reasons why I tried to start working on it). I hesitated to make a version 0 before I understood all of the cards in the database, so I just thought about a plan to go forward with and tried to build my first version. I definitely wanted to add ramp in order for it to be played with the abilities of Ragnarok, Invading Dragon Lord (EDL-096), using the “free” Will to play a two-cost spell which could get me a stone, and then copying this for one Will. With this, I could have a lot of resources.

With this plan the first version of the deck (V0) could be created. I read all the spells which could put a Magic Stone into the field with a total cost of 2 or less. Next, I searched for a plan to kill with a one-card combo that could do 4000 or more damage and could also be played around the moon children God’s Arts. And, of course, I added all the best counters of the game to the deck. During the first testing of the V0, I realized that most of the spells which put Magic Stone into the field, they came into play rested (so it was less stong than I initially thought). I needed some other plays in case I couldn’t find my cards in the early game. I therefore started thinking about cards that could provide giga combos or just be annoying/strong in mid game (for example Rumsfeld, Member of the Twelve Sacred Knights (CMB-010)), so I just added different combos into the deck and tried to make it more stable. I really didn’t want to play dead cards or cards which can be difficult to play outside of a certain combo.

The differences between V0 and its final version (V1) is shown from the the idea of always wanting to have a Will backup in case a combo wouldn’t work. The rest of the ideas didn’t change a lot compared to V0 (the ideas here were just optimized). The sideboard was unfortunately a bit of a mess, because I spent way too much time into the main deck itself. If I could say some things about this deck; I think I can say it’s not the type of deck I prefer personally the most, however it was the most enjoying deck to build!
